ÉireComposites to Lead New €4M MedTech Project to Develop a New Digital Stent

Irish SME collaborating with University of Galway and OpenText to develop the world’s first wireless digital stent platform.

GALWAY, November 2023 – ÉireComposites has announced the successful funding of the DigiStent project, in partnership with the University of Galway and OpenText. The consortium has received €4m from Enterprise Ireland under the DTIF Call 6 to develop DigiStent, a wireless digital stent that aims to predict future failure modes and rates in abdominal aorta stent patients with an accuracy of above 95%.

THE SILENT KILLER: Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms (AAA) have an incredibly high mortality rate, with an 80-90% risk of immediate death if ruptured. 200,000 men over the age of 55 are diagnosed per year in the United States alone. A frequently used treatment is Endovascular Aneurysm Repair, which involves the insertion of a stent. However, this solution suffers a failure rate of roughly 30%, which leads to death in about 37% of patients.

REAL-TIME DIGITAL ANALYSIS OF STENTS: Enter DigiStent, an AI-driven solution providing patient and doctor with continuous dynamic monitoring of the inserted stent, for early detection of endoleaks. The concept has been reviewed by an international panel of experts who have confirmed the novelty and clinical potential of the technology.

Leveraging IP in novel materials and manufacturing, AI-based analytics, and bio-sensor modelling and integration, the DigiStent team will develop the world’s first wireless digital stent platform with over 95% data accuracy. This innovation will offer peace of mind to patients, reduce the burden of medical costs, and ultimately save lives.

On a national and international scale, the project will have incredible impacts. It is set to run over the course of 3 years and is highly aligned to several National Strategic Objectives. DigiStent directly aligns with the Government of Ireland’s Research Priority Areas 2018-2023, prioritising health and medical devices, as well as UN Sustainable Development Goal 3 – ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all.
