ÉireComposites Striving for Sustainability
This World Environment Day and everyday, ÉireComposites is dedicated to building a greener society, through innovations for energy production, shipping, aerospace and more. We have received funding from many funding bodies who believe in our work, including the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland and the European Commission’s Horizon Europe programme. In line with the UN’s 17th Sustainable Development Goal, we accept these solutions cannot be brought about alone, and thus we collaborate with an extensive range of experts across our R&D projects to help reach our goals. Read on to learn about a few of our projects working to reduce carbon emissions and make the world a better place.
Wavefoil
Fuel savings of 5-15% for the Shipping Sector
ÉireComposites is manufacturing retractable bow foils with Wavefoil, based in Norway. These parts are essentially converting wave power directly into propulsive power, generating thrusts when the watercraft moves up and down. We are proud to be working with Wavefoil, reducing fuel usage and emissions to make the marine sector more environmentally friendly.
DeepWindDemo
A disruptive solution for the Irish floating wind industry
DeepWindDemo is one of our offshore wind energy projects, involving the design, build and testing of a novel deep-sea wind energy demonstrator. This novel technology consists of dual vertical axis wind turbines on a single semisubmersible floating platform, optimising both use of materials and performance. We are working alongside University of Galway on DeepWindDemo, with funding from SEAI.
OxReGen
“…I believe that this turbine can, and will, transform lives” – Prof. John Gregg, technology inventor
OxReGen is a very exciting project for us. With sustainability and simplicity at its core, this project will produce a low-maintenance wind turbine mini-grid system. This system will be used to increase energy access by generating clean, reliable electricity for a community in Somalia. Furthermore, OxReGen is reducing the emissions associated with transportation of parts by sourcing them locally as much as possible. Leading this work is the University of Oxford in the UK, with ÉireComposites and Save the Children International as partners, and funding from Innovate UK.
AD ASTRA
Reducing aerospace emissions
AD ASTRA is one of ÉireComposites’ newly funded R&D projects, in partnership with PlasmaBound and CREST TU Dublin. The work will accelerate uptake of lightweight composites in aerospace, by developing an automated surface treatment process to aid integrating the material into structural assemblies. As an industry that severely needs to reduce its CO2 emissions, this project is a necessity, hence its funding from The Government of Ireland and Enterprise Ireland under the Disruptive Technologies Innovation Fund (DTIF).
